Course Curriculum

History & Opportunities
Describe the origins of appearance enhancement; describe the advancements in cosmetology and list the career opportunities available to a licensed nail technician.

Life Skills
List the principles that contribute to personal and professional success; explain the concept of self-management; explain how to set goals; discuss ways to manage time; describe good study habits; define ethics and list the characteristics of a healthy, positive attitude.

Your Professional Image
Understand professional hygiene; explain the concept of dressing for success and demonstrate an understanding of correct postures and movement.

Communicating for Success
List the golden rule of human relations; explain the importance of effective communication with clients and co-workers and conduct a client consultation.

Infection Control
Understand rules and regulations; list the types of disinfectants and how they are used; define and explain how viruses are transmitted; describe how to safely clean and disinfect tools and equipment; explain the differences between cleaning, disinfection and sterilization and describe your responsibilities as a salon professional.

Anatomy and Physiology
Explain the importance of anatomy and physiology; describe cells, their structure and their reproduction; define tissue and identify the types found in the body and name the 10 body systems and explain their basic functions.

Skin Structure and Growth
Describe the structure and composition of the skin; list its functions; define important terms relating to skin disorders and discuss which skin disorders may be handled and which should be referred to a physician.

Nail Structure and Growth
Describe the structure and composition of nails and discuss nail growth.

CANB By-Laws
Review the Cosmetology Association of New Brunswick by-laws.

Nail Diseases and Disorder
List and describe the various disorders and irregularities of nails and recognize diseases of the nails that should not be treated in the salon.

Basics of Chemistry
Explain the difference between organic and inorganic chemistry; discuss the different forms of matter: elements, compounds and mixtures; explain the difference between solutions; explain pH and the pH scale.

Nail Product Chemistry
Understand the basic chemistry of salon products; explain adhesion and how adhesives work; describe the basic chemistry of artificial nail enhancements and describe overexposure principle and its application to nail care products.

Manicuring
Identify the tools required to perform a manicure and demonstrate safe and correct handling; exhibit proper setup of a table; identify the different nail shapes and perform a manicure, a French manicure and a Spa manicure incorporating all safety, sanitation and disinfection requirements.

Pedicure
Perform a complete pedicure.

Nail Enhancements
Describe the chemistry and main ingredients of UV gels; identify the supplies needed for UV gel application; perform nail enhancements using tips; perform overlays on fingernails and toenails incorporating all safety, sanitation and disinfection requirements.

Business Skills
Explain how to prepare for employment; describe the qualities that help a new employee succeed; list the principles of selling products and services; list the most effective ways to build a client base; list the factors to consider when opening a salon; explain the importance of keeping accurate business record and list the most effective forms of salon advertising.




Prerequisites for all programs: Grade 12 (18 years old) / Grade 10 (21 years old)
